How to Test My Microphone?

Testing your microphone is essential for ensuring clear audio in video calls, online meetings, gaming, and content creation. Our online microphone test tool provides a simple, privacy-focused way to verify that your microphone is working correctly without installing any software.

To begin testing, click the "Grant Microphone Access" button when prompted. Your browser will ask for permission to access your microphone—this is required for the test to work. Once permission is granted, you'll see a real-time audio visualizer showing your microphone's input levels. Speak into your microphone and watch the waveform respond to your voice. The visualizer displays audio levels in real-time, helping you identify if your microphone is picking up sound correctly.

For a more comprehensive test, use the "Record 3 Seconds" feature. This records a short audio sample and plays it back immediately, allowing you to hear exactly what your microphone captures. This playback test helps identify issues like low volume, static, distortion, or background noise. If you have multiple microphones connected (e.g., a headset, webcam mic, or built-in laptop mic), use the device selector dropdown to switch between them and test each one individually.

Privacy Note: All audio processing happens locally in your browser. We do not upload, store, or transmit your audio data to any server. Your privacy is protected—the test runs entirely on your device. For more audio testing tools, check our audio tester for speaker and headphone testing.

Why Is My Mic Not Working on Zoom?

Microphone issues in Zoom, Teams, or other video conferencing apps are common and can have several causes. The most frequent problem is incorrect device selection. Many users have multiple audio input devices (built-in mic, headset, webcam mic), and the application may be using the wrong one. Use our microphone test tool to identify which device is active and working correctly, then ensure Zoom is set to use that same device.

Browser permissions are another common culprit. If you've previously denied microphone access to Zoom or your browser, the application won't be able to access your microphone. Check your browser's site settings and ensure microphone access is allowed for the video conferencing platform. Similarly, operating system-level permissions may need to be granted. On Windows, check Privacy settings; on macOS, check System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Microphone.

Hardware issues can also cause microphone problems. A faulty USB port, damaged cable, or defective microphone can prevent audio input. Test your microphone using our tool—if it works here but not in Zoom, the issue is likely software-related. If it doesn't work in our test either, you may have a hardware problem. Try unplugging and reconnecting USB devices, testing different USB ports, or trying a different microphone to isolate the issue.

Audio driver problems can also prevent microphones from working. Outdated or corrupted audio drivers may cause devices to malfunction. Update your audio drivers through Device Manager (Windows) or System Preferences (macOS). If problems persist, try uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers. For USB microphones or headsets, ensure the device drivers are up to date from the manufacturer's website.

Browser Permission Issues

Modern browsers require explicit permission before websites can access your microphone. This security feature protects your privacy but can sometimes cause confusion when permissions are denied or blocked. Understanding how to manage these permissions is crucial for troubleshooting microphone issues.

Chrome/Edge: Click the lock icon or information icon in the address bar, then select "Site settings." Under "Microphone," choose "Allow." If the option is grayed out, check your system-level microphone permissions. You can also access all site permissions by going to chrome://settings/content/microphone.

Firefox: Click the lock icon in the address bar, then click "More Information." Go to the "Permissions" tab and find "Use the Microphone." Click "Allow" and reload the page. You can also manage permissions globally in Firefox Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Microphone.

Safari: Go to Safari > Preferences > Websites > Microphone. Find the website in the list and set it to "Allow." Safari also requires system-level microphone permissions, which can be managed in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Microphone.

If you've denied permission and want to re-enable it, you may need to clear the site's permissions and reload the page. Some browsers remember your choice and won't prompt again unless you reset permissions. If our microphone test tool shows a permission error, follow the browser-specific steps above to grant access. Remember that HTTPS is required for microphone access—if you're testing on a local development server, you may need to use HTTPS or localhost.
